The owners run the hamlet's English-style riding stables, offering lessons, pony rides for children, guided hacks through the hills and even food and wine tastings. This holiday apartment sits in Il Santo, a tiny stone hamlet less than a 10-minute drive from Capolona. The countryside takes over the moment you step outside, with hiking and riding trails threading straight out from the hamlet into the surrounding hills. Capolona itself covers the essentials with supermarkets, a pizzeria and a craft brewpub, while the rustic Fattoria Le Rocche restaurant serves celebrated Tuscan dinners in the nearby countryside.

The star day trip is Arezzo (20-minute drive), one of Tuscany's great underrated cities, a short drive south: climb to the sloping Piazza Grande, seek out Piero della Francesca's Legend of the True Cross frescoes in the Basilica of San Francesco, and time your visit for the antiques fair that fills the streets on the first weekend of each month. To the north, the Casentino valley unfolds with castles and the ancient forests of a national park. The nearest airport is Florence Airport, approximately an hour and a quarter's drive from this holiday apartment in the Tuscan countryside.
